New York City Itinerary

The Perfect 3-Day New York City Itinerary (Family-Friendly + Go City Pass Guide)

There’s nothing quite like your first trip to New York City. From iconic landmarks and world-famous museums to incredible food and unforgettable skyline views, three days is enough time to experience many of the city’s biggest highlights. This post may contain affiliate links.

For this trip, we stayed in the Financial District, which turned out to be an excellent home base. It was quieter than Midtown while still being within walking distance of several major attractions. You will see all the Viator links below for the attractions we visited. Be sure to click on each to find out more!

However, one of the best decisions we made was purchasing the Go City New York Pass. For our family of five, admission to all of the attractions would have cost approximately $1,500. Instead, we paid $1,200 for five 3-day passes, saving an incredible $300!

If you’re planning your own trip, I highly recommend looking into the Go City New York Pass. Depending on how many attractions you visit, it can save you hundreds of dollars.

Where We Stayed

We booked an Airbnb in the Financial District, and it was the perfect location for sightseeing. We loved being able to walk to Battery Park, the 9/11 Memorial, One World Observatory, and numerous subway stations.

Benefits of staying in the Financial District:

  • Easy access to Lower Manhattan attractions
  • Less crowded than Midtown
  • Great restaurants nearby
  • Convenient subway connections throughout the city

Day 1: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, 9/11 Memorial & One World Observatory

Morning: Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

Start your first day with one of New York City’s most recognizable landmarks.

Take the ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty and enjoy incredible views of the Manhattan skyline along the way. We then made our way to Ellis Island. My children did not enjoy this location as much as we didn’t stick around for very long.

Afternoon: 9/11 Memorial & Museum

After returning to Manhattan, spend time at the 9/11 Memorial before exploring the moving exhibits inside the 9/11 Museum. The museum provides an incredibly powerful look at the events of September 11 and the resilience of New York City. I honestly had a visceral response to this museum, and I highly recommend everyone to visit at least once.

Evening: One World Observatory

Finish your first day by heading to the One World Observatory. The elevator ride alone is worth the experience, and once at the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views over Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and beyond. Sunset is an especially beautiful time to visit.

Dinner

You simply can’t visit New York City without eating pizza. Whether you choose Joe’s Pizza, Juliana’s, or another neighborhood favorite, grab a slice (or two) to end your first day.

Day 2: Classic New York City

Morning: Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

We started the day with a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour, which is one of the easiest ways to get acquainted with New York City.

You can see many neighborhoods while hopping off at the attractions that interest you most.

Times Square

No trip to New York City is complete without experiencing the bright lights and nonstop energy of Times Square. Take plenty of photos, browse the flagship stores, and soak in the atmosphere.

Rockefeller Center

Next, head to Rockefeller Center. This was personally my favorite location to visit, as this is where my husband proposed to me twenty years ago.

Depending on the season, you may find:

  • Ice skating
  • The famous Christmas Tree
  • NBC Studios
  • Top of the Rock Observation Deck

If choosing between observation decks, many travelers love Top of the Rock because of its incredible view of the Empire State Building. We chose to skip Top of the Rock for time, but it comes highly recommended.

Empire State Building

One of the city’s most iconic skyscrapers, the Empire State Building offers another unforgettable perspective of Manhattan.

Even if you’ve already visited another observation deck, this historic building is worth experiencing.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

Families, aviation lovers, and history buffs will enjoy exploring the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Highlights include:

  • Aircraft carrier USS Intrepid
  • Space Shuttle Enterprise
  • Fighter jets
  • Submarine Growler

This was one of our favorite museums of the trip. This is the second space shuttle I have seen, and I am always amazed by how large they truly are.

Dinner at Nobu

We wrapped up the evening with dinner at Nobu, famous for its world-renowned Japanese cuisine. We especially enjoyed the sushi. Reservations are highly recommended.

American Museum of Natural History

Begin your final day exploring one of the world’s greatest museums.

The American Museum of Natural History offers exhibits featuring:

  • Dinosaurs
  • Ocean life
  • Gems and minerals
  • Ancient civilizations
  • Wildlife from around the globe

Plan several hours here because there’s so much to see.

After the museum, spend some time exploring Central Park.

Some favorite spots include:
