After each day of adventure, it was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. This post may contain affiliate links.

Day 1: A Scenic Introduction to the Island

We kicked off our adventure with a visit to the iconic Assateague Lighthouse. Standing tall above the surrounding marshes and forests, the historic lighthouse offers incredible views and a glimpse into the area’s rich maritime history. Whether you’re climbing to the top or simply admiring it from below, it’s a must-see landmark. You will need a park pass to visit the island, which you can get at this link: National Park Passes

Our next stop was the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. The exhibits helped us learn about the local wildlife, migratory birds, and the famous Chincoteague ponies before heading out to explore the refuge itself. It’s the perfect place to start your trip and get acquainted with this unique coastal ecosystem.

After a day of exploring, we returned to Snug Harbor Marina & Resort to relax by the water and enjoy the quiet island atmosphere before another exciting day ahead.

Day 2: Water Adventures and Sweet Treats

The second day was all about getting out on the water. We booked a cruise with Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruises, and it did not disappoint. The relaxing boat ride offered amazing views of the marshes, abundant wildlife, and even opportunities to spot the island’s famous wild ponies in their natural habitat. Captain Barry’s knowledge of the area made the experience even more memorable.

After our cruise, we headed to the beach for an afternoon of swimming. The wide sandy shoreline and gentle waves made it the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sunshine.

No beach day is complete without ice cream, so we wrapped up the evening with a stop at Island Creamery. Their homemade ice cream is legendary for good reason, with plenty of delicious flavors to choose from. It was the perfect way to cool off after a warm summer day.

Day 3: Wild Horses and Local Favorites

Our final day began with one more refreshing swim before setting out on one of the highlights of the trip—kayaking to see the famous wild horses. Paddling through the calm waters gave us a peaceful perspective of Assateague Island, and spotting the ponies grazing along the shoreline was an unforgettable experience. Seeing them in their natural environment was truly magical.

After working up an appetite, we enjoyed lunch at Pico Taqueria. The fresh tacos, flavorful ingredients, and laid-back atmosphere made it one of our favorite meals of the trip.

Before heading home, we couldn’t resist stopping for one last photo at the giant LOVE Adirondack chairs. These oversized Adirondack chairs are located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and spell out Virginia’s iconic “LOVE” message, making for a fun keepsake from the trip.
